App Flows and the 5E model

Trending Now!!

App Flows are an emerging way to use technology in the classroom, not to mention teachers can deliver a lesson plan paperlessly. App flows are a great way to step out of substituting technology for a paper/pencil assignment into a higher level of engagement.

What is an App Flow?
An App Flow is a continuum of carrying out a complete lesson or project digitally. Components can include anything from skill apps to creating a multimedia digital portfolio.

Apps and the 5E Model
Another common topic in education, of course, the 5E model. Roger Bybee developed the 5E model for inquiry based learning in the 1980s in science education.
The popularity of it’s across-content appeal has made it one of the most followed and easy to implement models in education today.
Putting the two together, we can see how to gauge whether an app/site is meaningful in planning our curriculum.

Below are just some sample questions to consider when creating an app flow using the 5E model.

Engage: How can I use a tech tool to generate interest and connect prior knowledge? Can I keep the tool within the parameters of the lesson?

Explore: Does this app/site allow the engagement to continue with key concepts explored? Is there an opportunity for this app/site to probe deeper into the relationships and understandings?

Explain: Is there an opportunity using the app/webstie for a connection to be made between prior knowledge to new discoveries?

Is that connection measurable with the app/site?

Elaborate: Does this app/site allow an outlet for new learning or an possibility to deepen an understanding?

Evaluate: Is there a built in evaluation tool in the way the app/site is being used? Does this app/site allow students to demonstrate understanding through problem solving or authentic assessment?

Again, when using technology in class, we must consider why we are using it, how it will be used and is the technology used in the appropriate place within the curriculum. Ultimately - will the lesson be enhanced from the technology integration?
